Kozhi Kuruma (Chicken cooked in coconut mixture along with spices)

Here is a Kozhi Kuruma or a chicken Kuruma.A mildly spiced chicken simmered in a perfect blend of coconut,poppy seeds and curd.This is a popular curry from Malabar muslims,who keep with them the inheritance of rich tastes and blends..!!


500 gms of Chicken cut ino medium pieces
3 Large Onions sliced finely
3 Large Tomatoes sliced finely
3 Green chillies cut lengthwise (or according to your tolerence level)
2 and half tsp of fresh Ginger Garlic Paste
1 tsp of Poppy Seeds
Half cup of curd
A piece of cinnamon (10 cm)
4 pods of cardamom

6 Cloves
1 and half cups of grated coconut
1 tsp of turmeric powder
2 tsp of chilly powder
1 and half tbsp of coriander powder
1 and half tsp of aniseed
Handful of coriander leaves
Oil , salt and water as necessary


  • Clean,cut and wash chicken pieces
  • Grind the coconut along with poppy and aniseeds adding water as necessary.This should be a fine paste with medium consistency
  • Crush the Green Chillies
  • Heat oil in a Kadai to add cinnamon,cloves and cardamom.Allow them to splutter
  • Add onion and fry till it go soft
  • Add the crushed green chillies,ginger garlic paste,chicken pieces,coriander powder,chilly powder,turmeric powder and the ground coconut paste.Fry till oil seperates
  • Now add curd,tomatoes,salt and enough water
  • Cook till the chicken is done and the gravy turn thick
  • Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve hot with chappathis,Parotta and Appam.
