Kadachakka-Kadala Koottu curry ! (Breadfruit & Chickpeas in rich coconut gravy)

To Cook Breadfruit
2 heaped cups of diced bread fruit (1 medium sized bread fruit,peeled and diced)
3/4 cup cooked chickpeas/black chana/bengal gram/karutha kadala
1 small piece of ginger,crushed
1 cup water
To Dry roast & Grind
1 cup of grated coconut
handful of shallots
1/2 tsp cumin seeds
1 tsp chilly powder
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
2 tsp coriander powder
1 clove
1 cardamom
few curry leaves
water as needed
To Temper
2 tsp coconut oil
1 tsp mustard seeds
2 sprig curry leaves
2 tbsp grated coconut


Put the diced breadfruit in turmeric water to remove stain.Clean and cook it in 1 cup water adding salt and ginger.Meanwhile roast the grated coconut adding the spices and shallots.Roast till coconut turn dark brown.Try to add the powders at the final stage so that it won’t burn.Now grind it adding little water to a fine paste.Add this to half cooked breadfruit and mix well.Add cooked gram and cook in law flame till the gravy thickens and raw smell disappears.You can add water if the gravy is too tight.But the final stage the gravy should be thick.Now heat coconut oil in a small skillet and splutter mustard seeds and curry leaves.Add grated coconut and roast till golden brown.Pour this over the koottu curry and mix well.Serve with rice as a side dish.

*Koottu curry is one of the main side dish in Sadya.
