Sambar Sadam / Sambar Rice ~ My Way !

This is one of my favorite meals ever.Sambar sadam.Being a south Indian, sambar is nothing new to me.But sambar sadam took lots of time to make it’s appearance in my kitchen.Months back,M,one of my friends sent me this.Sambar sadam, being the prasadam in a temple, she had taken it for me..Since it was warm,I decided to try for once.I couldn’t but stop till finished.Whenever I asked for the recipe to M,she was suggesting to try with few guidelines. It was worth an attempt. With dal and vegetables truly blend with rice, this is such a comfort meal to have. And one of the best lunchbox options for kids..Try and see.

Ingredients

1 cup raw rice (I used ponni rice)
1 cup toor dal /pigeon pea
small piece of asafoetida / Perungayam
1/4 tsp turmeric powder
1 medium sized carrot, chopped to 1/2 inch pieces
3/4 cup shallots
1/2 medium onion,sliced
1 small potato,chopped to 1/2 inch pieces
1 medium brinjal,chopped to 1/2 inch pieces
4 beans,chopped to 1/2 inch pieces
4 ladies finger,chopped to 1/2 inch pieces
2 large tomatoes,chopped finely
3 tsp sambar powder
1/4 tsp mustard seeds
1/4 tsp fenugreek seeds
3/4 tsp tamarind paste
4 cups water
salt,oil as required
2 sprig curry leaves

Method

Cook toor dal adding turmeric powder, asafoetida, salt and 1 cup water.Switch off after 4 whistles and allow it to cool.Meanwhile heat 2 teaspoons of oil in another pressure cooker and splutter mustard, fenugreek seeds.Add the shallots, curry leaves and sliced onion to this and saute for one minute.Reduce the heat and add the chopped vegetables and saute for another 2-3 minutes.Add sambar powder and chopped tomatoes and mix well. Finally add salt and tamarind paste followed by rice.Mix well and pour in the cooked dal along with 4 cups of water.Close the cooker and cook in full flame till 3-4 whistles.Switch off and let it cool .Open and serve hot.

* You may use as many vegetables you have. It’s just convenience.
