Home -made Sambar Powder | Tamilnadu Style Sambar Powder !

For most of our daily spice powders,we depend hugely on stores. The ready-made ones coming with varied brands assuring the purity of sorts. However, we all love to have our own such spice powders especially when it comes to certain recipes.Garam Masala,I think is one of such powders everyone would love to prepare and store on their own. These powders can create a magic with our recipes. Sambar Powder is perhaps the most sought-after basic spice powder among them.

Apart from such a home-made masala we are used to in Thrissur (varutharacha sambar),I always wanted to try my hands on a Tamilnadu version.Certain things we always love it from the source na ? So,here is what I loved-a very mild, making one feel it’s real – from Viji Varadarajan’s Samayal. This is for all those who can’t get the sambar powder they wish and searching for,but wanted to prepare badly..Love,

4 cups Coriander seeds
1 cup Toor dal /pigeon pea
1/2 cup Gram dal / chana dal
1/2 cup Urad dal/ black gram
1/4 cup Fenugreek seeds / uluva/methi
1/4 cup Mustard seeds
2 tbsp Cumin seeds/jeera
1/2 cup Dried red chillies
1/4 cup Peppercorns / black pepper
1/2 cup curry leaves, washed and dried
3 tbsp turmeric powder

Roast all the ingredients in a pan or kadai in medium flame till the dals turn golden and release a nice aroma.

Switch off and grind it to fine powder in batches.Store in airtight containers and use accordingly. You may store in a refrigerator as well.

Preparing at home is the best. Earlier we used to get it done at home. Nowadays its all readymade. Working folks can still do these at home if planned well.
