Sambharam | Spiced buttermilk from Kerala

My efforts to scribble few lines on ‘Sambharam‘ get stuck with mixed emotions.Like it’s absolutely unworthy to spend time on something too nostlagic and homely.Fact is,the ‘matter’ itself carry quintessential something with it and you don’t need to push .For Keralites out there, this is nothing but the homely refreshing drink. As for others “Sambharam” can be translated as the spicy, cool and refreshing drink served in Kerala especially during summer.Way before we forced ourselves to a ‘consumer state’,we had the practice of welcoming our guests with tender coconut water, fresh from our yard or Sambharam which can be prepared easily with the home-made buttermilk. However sambharam is unique with it’s filling refreshing feel and energy.
Here is how I do it …

Ingredients

*Serves two

1 cup curd
1-11/4 cup water (this depends on how watery yo need it)
1 small piece of ginger
1 long green chilly
few curry leaves
salt,as required

Method

Just blend everything in a mixer and serve. You may garnish with green chilly and curry leaves.Likewise,if you may chill it and serve.
**A variation of adding more curry leaves and a small garlic clove along with pinch of turmeric powder may prove good for diabetic patients.

Enjoy !
