Meen Aanam | Malabar style Fish Curry

Another fish curry,typical of Malabar.Since I loved the flavor ,decided to post here.This is for the fish lovers out there..

Ingredients

250 m fish,cleaned
1.5 tbsp oil,preferably coconut
1/2 tsp fenugreek seeds
2 sprig curry leaves
5 shallots, chopped
1 large onion,sliced
2 green chillies,chopped
1/2 ” ginger,crushed
2 garlic cloves,crushed
1 tomato,chopped
1.5 tsp kashmiri chilly powder
1 tbsp coriander powder
1/4 tsp turmeric powder
2 tsp tamarind paste mixed in 1/4 cup water
250 ml water
handful of coriander leaves,chopped

To roast & grind

1 cup grated coconut
2 shallots,chopped
1 sprig curry leaves
1/2 tsp fennel seed powder
pinch of turmeric powder
1 tsp coconut oil

Method

Heat oil in a small pan and roast all the ingredients mentioned in the section.Mix it thoroughly to avoid burning.Grind the mix to a smooth paste adding little water.Now in a curry pot heat oil and splutter fenugreek seeds.Reduce the heat and fry the chopped shallots and curry leaves till brown.Throw sliced onion,green chillies,ginger and garlic.Mix well and roast till the raw smell disappears.Add tomatoes and roast for two minutes more.Add chilly,coriander and turmeric powders and roast till the raw smell vanishes.Pour in the tamarind water and the 250 ml water mentioned.Bring to a boil in full flame and let it boil for 4-5 minutes.Reduce the heat and drop the fish pieces and salt.Bring to a boil with high flame.Reduce and cook in low flame till done.Add the ground coconut paste and chopped coriander.Simmer the curry till oil clears on top.Serve with rice or chapathi !

    that name is new to me, but not the fish curry!!! love the color of it, melange… i'm coming over with a plate of matta rice for sure!!!
